23 Jan 09 Gathering & A Memorable Week.
That’s right … the man spent about an hour with us last night during the January Gathering, sharing his opinions on Value Investing, property investing and his take on the current and future market and economic outlook. His presentation was in tendem with what he, Ryan Huang and myself wrote about in our latest release, “Profit From The Panic” which was featured on Channel NewsAsia on Monday 19 January 2009 during the morning program.
I then shared my views on the state of the market and highlighted the patterns (from the post below) which I think will repeat themselves this year. Apart from those patterns, we also looked at how historical events could play out in the future;
Everytime there was a recession, there was also some natural disaster to aggravate the situation. If it wasn’t a natural disaster, it was a Pandemic of epic proportions. And finally, there was a war to rejuvanate the economy. Going on the old addage of “When it rains, it pours”, you can see the early signs of such possibilities simply by reading the news lately. It is not a bad idea to watch for such calamaties as they could present profitable opportunities in the market for traders. Cold and cruel as it sounds to profit from misery, I think it is a far sillier crime to let such opportunities slip by when some good can be taken from such adversities. Well, if it makes you feel bad about such opportunistic gains, you can always donate the profits to the charity that best helps those in need during that crisis.
This is what Ryan, Adam and I have done with our book as 100% of the authors’ royalties go to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and AIDHA.
The launch of the book was on Wednesday 21 January 2009 and the two charities mentioned were on hand to receive their first cheques for the money made from pre-orders of the book prior to the launch. If the pre-orders were anything to go by, the book should provide a lot of smiles from these beneficiaries.
The ST Pocket Money Fund helps distributes funds to children of low income homes which cannot afford to eat 3 meals a day. AIDHA is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of low income migrant women through financial education.
On the same day that we launched “Profit From The Panic”, I received the very first physical copy of my own first solo effort as an author, “Secret Psychology of Millionaire Traders”.
If you want to get your hands on this, visit www.patterntradertools.com or pick up your copy from AK Education Group … that’s right, it is no longer AKLTG. As of yesterday, at the Annual General Meeting, Adam Khoo Learning Technologies Group has been renamed as AK Education Group.
Back to the Gathering …
One of the industries I’ll be keeping a close eye on will be Biotech and Pharma. In spite of the market’s obvious doubt and fear, the stocks in these industries have been nothing short of resilient. This is in-line with what I mentioned in November 17, 2008;
How sweet retrospect is when you get it right!
So while the market makes its madness, I’ll make sense from sectors like Pharma and Biotech and keep a close eye on stocks like: AMGN, AMLN, AZN, ABT, AGN, BCRX, BMY, CELG, CEPH, DNA, ELN, GILD, GNTA, GSK, IMCL, JNJ, LLY, MRK, NVS, PFE, PDLI, RGEN, SLAB, SGP, TEVA, VPHM & WYE. Now all I need is a catalyst …
It has been quite a week especially if you consider that I am not a morning person yet I made three 9am appointments and survived another gathering! Now I get an 11 day break till I resume Batch 25 on Feb 3.
Cheers to all and wishing all my readers a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year of the Ox (Bull)!
Safe Trading and Happy Hunting Always!
